As alcoholism progresses, the alcoholic has become possessed with drinking to the exclusion of nearly everything else. Everyone know there's a major problem. During end stage alcoholism, the mental and physical health of the alcoholic are seriously deteriorating. Many of the body's organs have been destroyed which lowers resistance to disease. Relationships at home, office, or socially may have been severely damaged, and there can be mounting financial and legal problems due to the alcoholic's powerlessness over alcohol.

Alcoholism stages can be classified into three stages of alcoholism. They are early stage, middle stage, and end stage alcoholism or late stage alcoholism. Its generally take years to develop. Alcoholism is a disease where alcoholic beverage consumption is at a level that interferes with physical or mental health, and negatively affects social, family or occupational responsibilities.

In the early alcoholism stages or what some people refer to as the adaptive stage of alcoholism is when the dependency on alcohol beings. You may find yourself turning the alcohol to get relief from your problems. You will also find yourself thinking more and more about alcohol. If you are drinking to become "drunk" because it relaxes you, you will start to drink more to find that same effect. Your body adapts to the increasing amount of alcohol in this stage. You will find that it's easy to talk and think as you would without alcohol. This stage usually does last quite sometime and chances are you're not even aware you have a problem. However as time goes on, each time you stop drinking and your blood alcohol level decreases you will find the need to drink becomes more stronger.

The need and desire to drink gradually becomes more and more intense, you have slowly moved into the second stage of alcoholism or the middle stage. You begin to drink larger amounts and more often happens as well as drinking earlier in the day. The alcoholic is losing control over drinking, and the body is losing its ability to handle alcohol like it did in the early stages of alcoholism. You might start to realize that you have a drinking problem but if you try to reduce drinking, you begin to experience withdrawal symptoms.

Unfortunately moving from middle stage to end stage alcoholism could be the beginning of the end if you aren't willing to get help. Once you have entered the end stage you will find yourself obsessed with drinking and you can no longer hide the fact that you have a problem. During this stage your have been damaged which lowers resistance to disease. You might have developed a host of problems such as cirrhosis of the liver, fatty liver, hepatitis, and brain damage also. If you continue to drink, most alcoholics in the end stages often die from complications from liver failure or heart failure.

The good news is you can stop or at least prolong further progression and ease some of the complications if you understand the signs and symptoms that indicate that alcohol consumption is becoming or is already a problem. There are many resources available in a variety of ways to help deal with alcoholism stages and the serious consequences of this disease.
